Local food producers invited to join Open Farms event

The National Farmers Union, with financial support from the Frontenac Community Futures Development Corporation is planning a one day event to support the local food system. On Sunday, Sept. 19th from 10am-4pm, the public will be invited to an “open house”, of farms throughout Eastern Ontario. Using a map and guide, the public can visit local farms of their choosing.
“Open Farms will be a fabulous opportunity for local farmers to promote farm gate sales, remind neighbours of their existence and educate the public as to how their food is grown,” says Sharon Freeman, event chairperson. “It will be a wonderful way to celebrate the harvest season!”
A web site is being built that will not only show the location of area farms complete with GPS co-ordinates, but will provide suggested routes and profiles of each farm.
According to Freeman, 30 farmers between Picton and Lansdowne have already expressed an interest in hosting tours of their farms. “We’ve had interest from dairy, egg, vegetables, fruit, meat, honey and herb producers,” says Freeman. “Here’s a chance to show kids that milk comes from cows and that carrots grow in soil.”
Some farms will have guided tours of their farms, some will showcase their animals and others will offer samples of their produce. Participating farms will be indicated by large signs at the end of their drives.
“Farms wanting to get involved in the tour need to sign up by June 30th,” says Freeman. For more information, e-mail openfarms2010@gmail.com or phone 613-353-6889.
