Local residents scammed sending money and gift cards

Prince Edward County OPP officers are reminding people to think twice before sending currency online.

Const. Aaron Miller, Community Safety Officer, said the detachment has responded to a number of fraud complaints this week.

On Tuesday, June 2 an individual reported responding to an ad for puppies for sale on Facebook.

“The correspondence lead to the purchaser sending Google Play cards in exchange for the puppy. Further messages with the alleged seller asked the purchaser for more Play cards. The total loss was approximately $795, and no puppy,” said Miller.

On Wednesday, June 3 an individual responded to a Facebook ad for an investment trading platform.

“$5,000 was sent via e-transfer in an attempt to purchase bitcoin. The funds were not recovered,” said Miller. “Folks are reminded to remain aware and educate themselves on current scams. Scammers continue exploiting folks during these uncertain times.”

He recommends that before sending money, bitcoin or gift cards online remember to pump the brakes, ask questions or conduct research.

“When in doubt, take a minute and reach out to a trusted source for information.”
