Loyalist College honours graduates at 50th anniversay convocation

Loyalist College celebrated more than 1,800 graduates in four ceremonies held in the 50th Annual Convocation ceremonies at the Belleville campus.

Friday afternoon, 548 graduates in the School of Media, Arts + Design and the School of Continuing Education were recognized.

Pat Tripp, sister of the late Hugh O’Neil; Paul Ferguson, Cool 100.1 FM and 95.5 Hits FM Program Director; George Reddom, Loyalist Alumni President; and Dr. Ann Marie Vaughan, Loyalist College President and CEO. Mr. Ferguson received the Hugh P. O’Neil Outstanding Alumni Award in recognition of his professional and community contributions.

Cobourg native Paul Ferguson, a 1995 Radio Broadcasting graduate, delivered the Convocation address. He is program director at Bellevile’s Cool 100.1 and 95.5 station and a three-time winner of the Canadian Country Music Association’s Music Director of the Year in a medium or small market.

“I have no idea where life is going to take you or what you will experience along the way,” said Ferguson. “I think that’s the most exciting part of this whole day. You’ve finished this chapter of the book, and congratulations! The rest of it is filled with blank pages … Never give up on your dreams, and in order to reach them, you’ll make mistakes. Be accountable for them. Learn from them. Be better for having made them.”

Ferguson was also the recipient of the Hugh P O’Neil Outstanding Alumni Award, presented by Pat Tripp, sister of the late former MPP, and by Ann Marie Vaughan, Loyalist College president.

Friday morning, 478 graduates in the School of Applied Sciences, Skills and Technology and School of Business, were honoured.

June Hagerman, Chair of the Loyalist Board of Governors; Convocation guest speaker Rob Huddleston, Manager of Human Resources for Foot Locker Canada; Dr. Ann Marie Vaughan, Loyalist College President and CEO.

Rob Huddleston, a Business Administration and Human Resources Management graduate in 2010, delivered the address. He is manager of Human Resources for Foot Locker Canada.

“The lessons I learned from my Loyalist professors echo in decisions I make to this very day,” said Huddleston. “I strive to one day do the same for those I coach and mentor throughout my career. I have defined that as the pinnacle of what I do. No matter the salary or title, I will seek the rush of fear to fuel me, the teaching of failure to guide me and the confidence I get from knowing my path and the way to success at the finish line.”

Among 46 recipients of The W. Garfield Weston Foundation Fellowship, providing financial assistance for students who maintain a specified minimum average, were Gwendolyn Wannamaker, of Picton, in the Construction Renovation Technician program; Robert Daniel Steenburg, of Picton, in the Electrial Techniques program and Aaron Crang, of Picton, in the Mechanical Techniques program.

At Thursday afternoon’s ceremony, 321 graduates of the School of Applied Sciences, Skills and Technology and the School of Health, Human and Justice Studies were recognized.

Convocation speaker Colonel Colin Keiver, 49th Commander of 8 Wing Trenton, is presented with an Honorary Diploma by Chair of the Loyalist College Board of Governors June Hagerman

Colonel Colin Keiver, Commander of 8 Wing CFB Trenton, delivered the address.

“Learning and personal development need to be lifelong activities,” said Colonel Keiver. “This applies to both your professional and personal lives. It will become even more important as you move on in your careers and have people working for you. Your single greatest responsibility will be to ensure they are as ready as they can be for what you are going to ask them to do. The most important thing is to be ready to learn because if there is one certainty in this world, it is change.”

Thursday morning, 472 graduates in the School of Health, Human and Justice Studies graduated along with 38 students in the Brock-Loyalist Collaborative Bachelor of Science in Nursing program.

June Hagerman, Chair of the Loyalist Board of Governors; Convocation guest speaker Marc Crawford, Associate Coach for the Ottawa Senators; Dr. Ann Marie Vaughan, Loyalist College President and CEO.

Marc Crawford, Associate Coach for the Ottawa Senators, delivered the convocation address.

“The first thing people say to me (about the Ottawa Senators) is, ‘We had an outstanding season,’ and to me, that’s what it is all about,” said Crawford. “It isn’t just one person who does it, it is a team, and a team is more than just the players, it’s the people who surround them. We are all connected here – we are connected to Belleville. I hope that you take a piece of the Quinte region with you, graduates, as you head out to see the big, bright world.”
