Make stronger connections for better mental health

Feeling connected and part of your community is important.
Isolation and loneliness are described by the World Health Organization as being widespread, with 16 per cent of people experiencing loneliness – a serious issue impacting physical and mental health, quality of life, and even longevity. This year the Canadian Mental Health Association has declared May 4- 10 as Mental Health Week, inviting Canadians to “Come Together – Stronger Connections, Better Mental Health”.
At the library we’ll be recognizing this week in a few ways. Of course, dropping into the library any time is a great way to stay connected with your community – chat with the staff, discover programs and clubs you can join, and check out the bulletin boards to see what else is happening in your neighbourhood.
Participating in a friendly book club, joining in a storytime program with your child, or volunteering to become a Friend of the Library are all great ways to meet people and stay connected. During Mental Health Week we will also have a special display at the Picton Branch highlighting books that address mental health in a variety of ways.
Additionally, in support of the Community Safety and Well-being plan, and as part of Mental Health Week, Prince Edward Learning Centre will be offering a series of workshops called “Journalling for Wellness” at the Milford Branch Library.
You’re invited to learn how journalling can help improve wellness through exploration of a variety of journalling styles. These workshops will take place May 6, 12, 30, and 27 from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Register with the Learning Centre directly at (613) 476-1811 or email jennifer@pelc.ca to reserve your spot.
A talk will be held on Thursday, May 7 at 2 pm at the Picton Branch Library about Mental Health in Public Spaces. Facilitated and organized by Suzanne O’Connor the talk will feature Dr Joe Burley, Psychiatrist. Join them for an information session where they will discuss examples of real-life situations that can sometimes feel confusing or overwhelming in public spaces and offer clear, supportive ways to recognize what may be happening and how to respond with confidence and compassion.
Our focus on mental health and wellness continues throughout May. On Thursday, May 21 at 2 pm, Janet Elson of Heartwood Healing Arts will join us at the Picton Branch for a Laughter Yoga session. You don’t need a reason to laugh. You just need a reason to show up. Laughter Yoga combines intentional laughter with gentle breathwork to flood your body with feel-good chemistry, no jokes or flexibility required.
Rooted in the science of play and the medicine of breath, a single session can shift your nervous system in ways that last for days. All are welcome – no prior experience is required. You are welcome to drop in, or reserve your spot at peclibrary.org or by calling (613) 476-5962.
Join us for programs, connection and community at any branch of the Library. Drop in at any branch and learn more.
