Prince Edward County residents are the majority among those forming a new chapter for an area Council of Canadians.

The Council of Canadians was founded 30 years ago, in 1985, by publisher, author and activist Mel Hurtig to talk about how federal and provincial governments were becoming increasingly focused on big corporations and resource-extraction and “to give a real voice to Canadians who want a better Canada”.

Maude Barlow was elected chairperson in 1988 and she has since championed ways the non-partisan council can highlight  social, economic and environmental injustices.

About 40 people attended an initial meeting June 29, organized by Richard Hewitt, in Belleville to initiate the formation of a new Quinte chapter. CoC regional director Mark Calzavara facilitated the meeting at the OPSEU hall.

Every person was invited to introduce themselves and describe what concerns had brought them forward and many themes surfaced – including the environment, democracy and energy.

Calzavara made a presentation about how chapters work and can evolve and volunteers raised their hands to fill the requisite five key positions.

A first official meeting is set for Monday, July 13th at 6:30 p.m., in the OPSEU Hall, 191 Dundas Street East, Unit #3, Belleville. All interested are invited to attend. The agenda will include choosing a name for the new chapter and discussion of going forward, especially in this pre-election period.  A series of democracy town halls are to be set up by the Council of Canadians throughout Canada, to educate and inform, and offer grassroots tools for the lead-up to the Oct. 19 federal election.

“No matter what party wins in 2015, a stronger grassroots will have increased capacity and clarity to challenge the status quo that has become a concern for so many citizens,” said County member Lynne Rochon.

  1. Private Sector says:

Pafetic, innit?. A bunch of old leftist luvvies, retired for decades on defined-benefit public sector pensions, railing against the evil “Mike Harris” and excoriating “Harper”. G-d forbid they simply get back into the private sector work force- and finally contribute to their assisted futures, thereby relieving future generations of subsidy to their empty, parasitic lives…
