Many skipped ‘skip day’

Prince Edward OPP report no major occurrences were reported in relation to this year’s “skip day”.
“The annual day in June known informally as “skip day” for many local and outlying high school students has come and gone without too many issues for the wardens at the Sandbanks Provincial Park and Prince Edward OPP,” reports constable Kim Guthrie. In past years the event has brought thousands of students to the park.
“Conflicting information indicated the designated “skip day” was to be either the 1st or 4th of June this year, so Prince Edward OPP with the support of the Highway Safety Division RIDE Unit, Emergency Response Team and staff at the park were prepared for both days.”

Guthrie said Friday’s wet weather dampened most activity at the park and the day was uneventful.  Monday however, was dry, and somewhere between 200-300 young people braved the cloudy cool weather.
Guthrie said some students had checked into the park on Sunday and camped overnight beginning their partying early.
Several evictions were conducted by 8 am Monday morning and at 10 am a 17-year-old Kingston male was arrested for causing a disturbance and being intoxicated in a public place.  Later in the afternoon, Guthrie reports a second teen male was arrested for public intoxication and removed from the park.  A third arrest occurred when another teen male was found to be in possession of a controlled substance.

Eleven traffic related charges were laid on drivers traveling to and from the park, many of them for speeding.
