New mayors and wardens took a familiarization tour of 8 Wing/CFB which included visits to the Air Traffic Control Tower, 1 Hangar, 429 and 436 Squadron displays, 424 Squadron and 426 Squadron displays at the Air Mobility Centre.
Joining Prince Edward County Mayor Robert Quaiff on the tour Quinte West Mayor Jim Harrison, Belleville Mayor Taso Christopher and Hastings County Warden Rick Phillips.
“It was totally amazing to know what the base represents, their role, their commitment and the fact that this base is an 80/20 base, meaning they are 80 pr cent active in service and 20 per cent training and one of a kind in North America,” said Quaiff. “The scale of what they do is incredible.”
Quaiff also noted the economic spinoff the base represents to the County as many of the military families live off the base, travel within and enjoy Prince Edward County.
“The constant monitoring of the airways is something I didn’t know about,” he added. “Anything and everything with respect to who is in our flight path is very much known. We are a very protected area.”
