Meals on Wheels, deliveries available for seniors County-wide

Meals on Wheels are now available anywhere in Prince Edward County. The Prince Edward County Community Care for Seniors Association encourages seniors or their caregivers to call to make arrangements for delivery of hot, or frozen meals. Due to the commitment of volunteers the hot meals go out Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays in all locations using physically distant delivery procedures.

Free delivery of groceries, medicines and other essentials is also available.

Ontario’s Chief Medical Officer of Health recommended that individuals over 70 years of age self-isolate and seek services over the phone or internet.

With that in mind, and with support from the United Way Hastings & Prince Edward, the agency quickly and efficiently established a free delivery program. Community Care’s COVID-19 response is also funded in part by the government of Canada’s New Horizons for Seniors Program.

“We quickly realized that some seniors need help to place a grocery order by email or online and so we’re now offering that service as well,” said Debbie MacDonald Moynes, executive director. The local grocery stores and Community Care are working closely together to make it possible for seniors to stay safe at home. By doing so seniors are reducing their own risk during the pandemic and also are keeping others safe.”

Seniors who are isolated at home can find some ways to engage with others by calling Community Care. Volunteers make regular calls to just chat and there are online and telephone active living programs available, too.

The Community Care staff are working from home offices. Call 613-476-7493 and leave a detailed message. Calls are returned regularly throughout the day.

Updates to services are posted to the Community Care Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/CommunityCareforSeniors and to the website at www.communitycareforseniors.org

“We help seniors live at home every day of the year and even during a health emergency like this” says MacDonald Moynes. She encourages seniors to reach out for assistance and support.
