Meet Rebecca Maracle, Mohawk Medicine Woman and Feathersmith

Rebecca Maracle, whose work is featured in the Mohawk Artist Exhibit at St. Andrew’s in Picton, was asked what the invitation to come alongside this community with her voice and her vision meant to her.

Rebecca responded as follows:
It has felt like an extension to me – it’s like when you reach your hand out in friendship. It has been about sharing culture in the ways that we know how as Indigenous people. It’s all about sharing the beauty of what we see.

What stuck with me as I was watching Christi Belcourt’s art go up on the wall at St. Andrew’s is that even after everything that has unfolded between our two cultures we still see the beauty in what is around us.

In our Thanksgiving address the first thing we acknowledge is the people. So we need to go back and acknowledge our Thanksgiving for all of the nations in all of the corners. There is a lot of hurt among us and it comes with a need for healing and so when St. Andrew’s reaches out it shows that healing can begin.

But it is also about the bigger picture. My name Karakwine means “she brings the
light” OR “she leads the path”.

The role that I play as an artist and a medicine healer is to bring the message of love and compassion. By having my art as an outlet not only am I healing myself and serving as a vehicle for healing among my people, I am hoping to open the eyes of other people to understand the Ohén:ton Karihwatéhkwen (the Great Thanksgiving address) which means the thanks we give creation before any business is done.

Rebecca Maracle will speak at St. Andrew’s during the service on Sunday, Oct 21 at 10:30.
Visit the exhibit Oct 19, 20, 26, 27 from 11-1.

Meet the Artists, Saturday, Oct 27, 11-1.
St. Andrew’s Church is located at 31 King St., Picton.
