Picton rocker wins guitar in Rocksmith battle with Megadeath

Chris Bonham-Carter got more than a t-shirt at Sunday night’s thrash metal concert in Kingston. He left the K-Rock Centre with Megadeath lead guitarist Chris Broderick’s guitar.
“On my way home – one guitar richer, signed and used by Chris Broderick himself,” Bonham-Carter told his Facebook friends after the concert.
Bonham-Carter also thanked his family and friends for their votes in a contest that led him to the guitar verses guitar competition with Broderick.
Late January, Bonham-Carter found a contest in which he submitted a video of himself playing a Megadeath cover. The votes came tumbling in. His 438 votes far outweighed the closest competitor’s 188 votes. Bonham-Carter had won the right to battle Broderick in a game of Rocksmith – a game where you can plug in any real guitar to your console, or computer.
Trouble was, he has never played Rocksmith before.

Bonham-Carter playfully grumbled about his dad, Gavin, owning a video store that doesn’t stock Rocksmith. Mom, Charlene, came to the rescue, buying him the game about a week before the big contest.
“He practised every day,” Charlene said, noting she and Gavin were looking forward to going to the K-Rock Centre concert to show support. She also joked about having a pocket full of ear plugs.
And he not only won a guitar, he got to jam with Broderick and received some great compliments from him.
Megadeth, the headliner, has sold 25 million albums, and recently garnered its 10th Grammy nomination for the single Public Enemy No. 1, from Th1rt3en, in the category of Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance. Also on stage were Motorhead, Lacuna Coil and Volbeat.
Chris Bonham-Carter plays guitar and does vocals for the local band Moira, Darling. In 2010 their metal showed its mettle as the band took home gold at the Rock the House Hard contest at Toronto’s Opera House Club. The band won a $20,000 prize package that included 30 hours of studio time, an interview with a major independent publishing label, merchandising, a development deal and more.
The band’s debut CD is called Conception.
