Mild temperatures bring flooding risks

Mild temperatures, rain and snow melt could cause some localized flooding of smaller creeks and ditches in Quinte Conservation’s watersheds.  Some low-lying areas may experience ponding water.   Larger rivers such as the Moira, Salmon and Napanee rivers are expected to handle the runoff.

“The recent cold weather has resulted in frozen ground conditions and a thick, icy crust on the snow.  The forecast rain will run off icy surfaces into waterways and this could result in changing conditions,” said Bryon Keene, Water Resources Manager.

“There is also a risk of nuisance flooding in areas due to ponded water backed up by ice covered snow banks. Residents should keep a close watch on local conditions and keep up to date on weather forecasts and warnings. Residents will also want to ensure that their sump pumps are in running order and that driveway culverts are not blocked,” said Keene.

Quinte Conservation urges the public to exercise caution around all watercourses due to strong currents under the ice and very cold water temperatures. Stream banks are slippery and treacherous.  Dams and other water control structures should be avoided at all times.
