A record crowd celebrated the 20th year of migration monitoring at the Prince Edward Point Bird Observatory.

Following a buffet dinner Saturday at the PEC Yacht Club, PEPtBO’s annual meeting’s activities began with the Annual Spring Bird Count wrap up.

Attendees learned the migration monitoring data from PEPtBO is impressive. Data from 13 years leading up to 2013 has been collected and analyzed in report form.

PEPtBO can report that from 2001 to 2013, a total of 6.7 million birds of 273 species have been detected (this data is collected through a daily census by the Bander-in-Charge making note of all the birds seen and heard).

In 13 years, a total of 151,046 birds of 166 species have been banded, with more birds banded in fall (75,044 individuals during standard banding) than in spring (58,106 individuals during standard banding). In fall, 84 per cent of birds captured are birds that have been just hatched in the Boreal forest and are making their first migration to South and Central America.

Past President Rosemary Kent brought the story of PEPtBO’s first 20 to life by inviting several people to the stage to tell and sing their PEPtBO story – including Joanne Dewey, Terry Sprague, founder Brian Joyce, David Okines, Jeannette Arsenault, Janet Kellough and Carolyn Barnes.  Included in Rosemary’s presentation were lists of the many long-term volunteers to the Bird Observatory.

The Whiskey Jacks – David Okines and Gerard Phillips – were the winners of the Laphroaig trophy with 134 species spotted. Cheryl Anderson was awarded the Barrel of Money trophy for the most dollars sponsored.  Photo contest winners were Sydney Smith, for her photo of a pair of Northern Cardinals; Kyle Blaney for his shot of a Blue Headed Vireo and Ayman Rizk for his photo of a Kingbird. This year’s guest birders, Mayor Robert Quaiff and his grandson were congratulated on their excellent bird count results.

Three positions on the board were endorsed during the meeting: Peter Fuller as vice-president, John Hirsch as secretary and Kathy Felkar as director at large.  Two positions of director at large remain open.  The Technical Advisor position formerly filled by the late David Hussell is also still open.
