Minor traffic delays as work on Royal Hotel continues

There were a few minor traffic delays on Picton’s Main Street as work on the historic Royal Hotel continues.

The shoring towers at the Royal are coming down this week in preparation for completion of the brick installation along the east and northern walls.

“We are completing the roof in the early new year with a view to moving on to interiors this spring,” said Sharon Laredo, of The Royal Hotel. “Demolition at 6 Ross Street, part of The Royal’s precinct, is now complete and the rebuild is under way.”

The 6 Ross Street location was the former stables for the hotel and will house administrative offices, retail space and five additional suites.

An anchoring system put in place to fix the east wall of the building that suddenly settled in April 2017, was continued on all sides, adding significant time to the project.

Owner Greg Sorbara has stated that while they cannot yet pin-point the re-opening date, it is anticipated for the end of 2019 or early 2020.

When the Royal first opened in 1879, it was the centre of social life in Picton and the larger community of Prince Edward County. The restoration of the heritage designated property is designed to reflect the storied 140-year long rich history.

Once open, it will serve as a boutique hotel with 28 rooms, two restaurants, a small spa, patio garden and lounge with event capacity for up to 150 guests. Executive chef Albert Ponzo has a passion for working closely with nature and plans to draw inspiration from the County, his Italian roots and County produce.
