Monday’s federal election depends on your vote

Bay of Quinte federal riding candidates, from left, are: Liberal: Neil Ellis (current MP), Conservative: Tim Durkin, NDP: Stephanie Bell, Green: Danny Celovsky, The People’s Party: Paul Bordonaro

With the Liberals and Conservatives deadlocked and the NDP gaining significant ground, seat projections for Monday’s federal election remain uncertain.

Elections Canada reports an estimated 4.7 million ballots were cast in advance polls this time – some 29 per cent higher than the advance voting in 2015. The total does not include ballots cast at on-campus stations or those cast outside the advance poll period at local returning offices.

The turnout at polling stations today will determine the outcome of Canada’s 43rd federal election in 338 ridings across the nation. A majority government would need 170 seats.

The Bay of Quinte riding has 93,706 electors on the voting list – and if you didn’t get your registration card, you can still cast your ballot.

Voters across the nation will have 12 hours to cast ballots to select their federal representative in Ottawa. Here, polls will be open for 12 hours from 9:30 a.m. until 9:30 p.m. Bring identification to prove your identity and address, along with your voter information card.

Without a card, you need to show either one piece of ID issued by the Canadian government with your photo, name and current address; two pieces of ID, both with your name, and at least one must have your current address.

Even if you don’t have ID, you can vote if you declare your identity and address in writing, and have someone who knows you, and votes at the same polling station vouch for you.

In 2015, the newly created Bay of Quinte Electoral District had 57,924 ballots cast, with 211 rejected.

Bay of Quinte results from 241 polls:
Neil Ellis, Liberal: 29,281 votes (50.7%)
Jodie Jenkins, Conservative: 19,781 (34.2%)
Terry Cassidy, NDP: 7,001 (12.1%)
Rachel Nelems, Green: 1,278 (2.2%)
Trueman Tuck, independent: 373 (0.6%)

Voter turnout: 69%, or 57,924 of 83,954 registered electors. (Does not include electors who registered on election day.)
Population: 109,488
