Months long Wellington Main closure; 40 days of trail drilling and blasting begins Jan. 13

Work on the Wellington watermain and sanitary sewer project will impact vehicle and pedestrian traffic on Wellington Main Street for the coming months.
A section of Wellington Main Street in front of the water and wastewater treatment plants is to be reduced to one lane Monday, Jan. 6 to Monday, Jan. 13. Traffic is to be controlled by temporary traffic lights.
A months-long full closure of Wellington Main Street between Cleminson Street and the entrance to the Wellington water and wastewater treatment plant is to begin on Monday, Jan. 13.
The Millennium Trail between Cleminson Street and Wellington on the Lake has been closed to all users since Dec. 18 and will continue throughout the full closure of Wellington Main Street. Beginning Jan. 13 residents can expect drilling and blasting operations on the closed areas of the trail between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday to Friday between Belleville and Consecon streets.
Drilling and blasting are expected to take place over 40 business days. If required beyond that period, the municipality will provide an update to the community. Three long sirens are to be sounded to warn of an imminent blast. The work is part of the Wellington water and sewer construction project.
The closure of the trail is required so that emergency services (fire, police, and paramedics) can use the trail to access the Wellington on the Lake community, off Prince Edward Drive, during the Wellington Main Street closure.
The municipality states the Main Street full closure cannot be avoided because the existing sanitary sewer and watermains are located within the road. A bypass lane is not possible because of private property on either side of Wellington Main Street and obstructions caused by utilities.
The closure is expected to continue for several months depending on the progress of the work. Updates are to be provided as the construction progresses.
Through traffic and pedestrian access will not be permitted during the full road closure. Local traffic access will be maintained for residents living within the closure limits.
The main detour route around the closure is Loyalist Parkway, Greer Road, Danforth Road, and Consecon Street.
An alternate detour route will also be in place to assist with traffic delays on Wellington Main Street during the road closure.
Eastbound traffic can detour around the Village of Wellington by following Danforth Road and Swamp College Road.
A new trunk watermain is required to meet the water distribution and storage needs of the existing residents and future development within the Wellington urban serviced area. The new sewer trunks will accommodate anticipated increase in wastewater flows from new developments.
The new trunks will be constructed from the location of the existing water and wastewater treatments plants to the east along Wellington Main Street, north on Cleminson Street, east along the Millennium Trail and then connect to the new water tower on Belleville Street.
A watermain upgrade will be completed starting at Prince Edward Drive and Elmdale Street, going south to Wellington Main Street, and west along Wellington Main Street to the treatment plant.
The project also includes a new sanitary pumping station located on the Millennium Trail near the intersection with West Street. This pumping station is a component of the new trunk sanitary sewer.
The municipality expects to complete the project by the end of 2025.
