More stories of The County at The Regent

The third series of History Moments will be launched at a free public event on Monday, July 4th at 2 pm. at The Regent Theatre in Picton.

The History Moments are short, video vignettes on local history themes that play before movies at The Regent, are distributed into area schools, archives, libraries, and museums, used as part of the interpretative program to the over 550,000 annual visitors to The Sandbanks Provincial Park, retailed at many County shops, and broadcast online on www.historyliveshere.ca

History Lives Here Inc., a Picton communications company, produces the series in association with the Museums of Prince Edward County, The Glenwood Cemetery and The Regent Theatre. This year’s series of 12 vignettes profiles British General Sir Thomas Picton, Loyalist settler Peter Van Alstine, Quaker and Mohawk settlement, the Danforth Road, early education, and temperance pioneer Letitia Youmans among others.

Series producer Peter Lockyer says the idea behind the History Moments is to awaken the community to the rich history that is all around us.

“The partners in this heritage project,” says Lockyer,” all feel that our history is our greatest untapped resource. It’s a hidden history lying dormant in the collections and properties of our museums, archives, libraries and cemeteries. But it can be transformed into “popular history” – goods and services that meet the worldwide consumer marketplace for history and heritage. Together with our summer Gallows & Graveyards walking tours and our fall/winter lecture series, we hope to engage the community in a collective effort to preserve the landmark buildings and special places that make The County the charming and unique place it is, and to develop a heritage economy that gives us the tourism dollars to re-invest in heritage. There is a huge opportunity in developing our heritage potential.”
