National Park at Ostrander Point a great idea

Re: Ostrander Point National Park
Dear Mr. Kramp:

Thank you for sending me a copy of your June 6th letter to Hon. Peter Kent, P.C., M.P., Minister of the Environment.

Your suggestion that Ostrander Point could become a National Park makes great sense to me.  It would be a desperately-needed move to protect endangered species such as the Whip-Poor-Will and the Blanding’s Turtle from Gilead Power Corporation which has sought provincial authority to “kill, harm and harass” these species, to construct an industrial wind energy project.

A National Park at Ostrander Point would ensure continuity of environmental protection of the natural habitat in this internationally-designated Important Bird Area, where thousands of wildlife gather twice each year as part of their arduous migration across Lake Ontario.

A National Park at Ostrander Point would also be a significant contribution to the economic vitality of Prince Edward County.  It would be a “shoulder-season” tourist attraction for birders and hikers to the unspoiled wildlife habitat at the South-Eastern end of our municipality, augmenting the beachside camping destination offered by Sandbanks Provincial Park at our municipality’s South-Western shore.

I hope you will be able to succeed in your discussions with your colleagues in Provincial and Federal governments, to make this great idea become a reality.

Jim McPherson
