New 256-bed nursing home in Brighton to amalgamate two long-time County homes

Prince Edward County will soon say goodbye to two long-time nursing homes as Omni Quality Living has broken ground for a new 256 long-term care bed facility called Presqu’ile Place, in Brighton.

Omni currently operates two homes in the County – Kentwood Park with 45 beds and West Lake Terrace with 47 beds.

“Our new Brighton home, Presqu’ile Place, will be an amalgamation of three of our older homes, Kentwood, West Lake Terrace and Maplewood (in Brighton),” said Samantha Charlton, Omni communications manager.

Located at 20 Georgina St., the approximate $100-million development is to be designed to meet modern standards of long-term care, offering a mix of basic and private rooms, along with spacious resident areas and contemporary amenity spaces.

“On behalf of Omni Quality Living, we’re thrilled to be breaking ground on Presqu’ile Place,” stated Raheem Hirji, Omni President and CEO. “The new 256 beds will feature a combination of basic and private rooms and brand-new spacious home areas with amenity space. We’re grateful to the Ontario government for their support in building much needed capacity for Ontario’s seniors.”

Presqu’ile Place is expected to open to its first residents in 2027 – the same year the County’s new 160-bed facility is expected to open behind the current 84-bed H.J. McFarland Memorial Home.

H.J. McFarland residents applauded their peer Debbie Burns who joined officials and politicians on the end of official ground breaking shovels in June 2025 to mark the beginning of construction of the new $83 million municipal nursing home, located directly behind the current building.

Currently the County has 273 beds – 84 at H.J.; 97 at Hallowell, 45 at Kentwood and 47 at West Lake. When the new builds are complete in 2027, there could be 257 beds – 160 at the replacement H.J. and 97 at Hallowell.

Of note, however, is that in 2022, the province announced it would be adding 31 new and upgrading the 97 beds at the “C” class Hallowell House, then owned by Revera, which stated it wanted to find and obtain property with the hope a new building could be ready as early as 2024 or 2025. Hallowell House is now owned by Southbridge Care Homes. An email asking about future plans for Hallowell House has been sent.

Established in 1975, Omni acquired Kentwood Park and West lake Terrace in 1997. Both are “C” class. Homes that meet only 1972 facility standards that were built with narrow hallways and four-person shared rooms are labelled “C” on a provincial scale that includes designations of “New,” ” A,” “B,” “C” and “D.” Those homes represent almost one-third of Ontario long-term care beds. The majority of “C” beds exist in for-profit homes.

In 2012, the County lost 78 beds with the closure of Picton Manor Nursing Home (on the site of the County’s first hospital). That facility was closed due to electrical, structural and financial issues.

That would be up to the owners.

  2. Angie says:

From listening to people who have been through this sort of thing, the personal feelings, thoughts, and inconvenience of the residents and families being relocated do not enter into the relocation equation. At all. This is a business decision.

  3. Teena says:

What is going to happen to the old nursing homes after the residents are moved? Can they be upgraded and reused?

  4. angela says:

Wondering how the families of residents at Kentwood and West Lake nursing homes feel about these relocations. A long drive to visit when the new home opens.
