New council will formalize goals, attend orientation sessions

County mayor Robert Quaiff has called two special council meetings for Wednesday, Jan. 7 at Shire Hall.
The morning meeting will formalize the short and long-term goals of council, and consider the 2015 goals and objectives for the Chief Administrative Officer.
Following a lunch break, the meeting will resume in the afternoon to approve the final draft 2015 budget to allow the bylaw setting the tax rates for the year to be presented to council at its Jan. 27 meeting.

Special orientation sessions are being held Jan. 8-9 for the mayor and council. In these sessions, council will gain an overview of the Information Technology, clerks, finance, community centres and HJ McFarland Memorial Home departments under the Corporate Services and Finance Commission. They will also gain an overview of the fire department and on the Friday, have an orientation session to gain an overview of the planning and development approval process.

The regular meeting of council is set for Jan. 13.

Seems rather backwards to me. Council will approve a 2015 budget on Wednesday. In doing so, they will have already determined the direction/priorities of each deptartment for the year.
On the following two days they will learn in detail how those same departments function.
Wasn’t the election in late October? 75 days after the election, all those new councilors we elected are getting their first real insight into how this thing works? And they will have already approved a budget with a 4% increase. Based on what knowlwedge?
Wow Mr. Quaiff. Is this your idea of leadership?
