New visual identity for school board

A new chapter in the book about Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board was written Tuesday night when the board of trustees approved a new visual identity for the HPEDSB.

“Known as the achievement concept, the logo represents new beginnings, growth, feeling alive and part of nature/the world around us,” said Kerry Donnell, communications manager. “A swoop and the sun are prominent elements, illustrating movement and striving for success.”

The new colours are plum, gold and teal.

Donnell notes the creation of the new visual identity coincides with other strategic corporate initiatives currently under way, including the new strategic plan committing to principles of equity and constant improvement to being a restorative organization.

A committee consisting of a cross-representation of employees and community partners participated in the initiative over several months.

Donnell said when the committee first met in November 2019, it had a mandate to refresh the look of HPEDSB to reinforce what it stands for; take HPEDSB from 1998 to 2020 and beyond; involve front-line staff to get input on how and what people feel about HPEDSB; and come up with three new visual identity concepts (logos, colours) to be presented to the board of trustees for a final decision.

“It also considered what we collectively envision as the organization of the future by answering the questions ‘What do we stand for?’ and ‘How do we want to be recognized?'”

Committee member responses to the questions included: choosing our own path; relationships; choices;
connections; how we make people feel; freedom; cared for; safe; trust; we know your kids; and be your best self.

The committee met six times between November and February 2020 and looked at 61 variations.

Director of Education Sean Monteith, said he is proud of the work done by the rebranding committee.

“Their open and heartfelt discussions, deliberations and decisions are now part of the history of this dynamic and evolving organization.”

The existing lighthouse/book logo was adopted in 1998 following the amalgamation of the Hastings County Board of Education and the Prince Edward County Board of Education. Most, if not all Ontario school boards rebranded around the same time.

“Many have since rebranded with new and fresh visual identities, along with renewed branding to reflect the organization’s updated representation of who it is and what it stands for – essentially its reputation,” said Donnell.

“This is a very exciting time at Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board,” said Lucille Kyle, chair of the board. “As trustees, we appreciate all the work that has been done to refresh the HPEDSB look. We love it!”

The new logo will be rolled out in the coming months on the strategic plan, website, social media, letterhead, banners, presentations, various marketing materials and publication, e-communications, etc.
