Nominate an Educator of the Year

Are you a student or colleague of an outstanding educator, or an appreciative parent of a wonderful teacher, administrator, early childhood educator or mentor?
The Sir Mackenzie Bowell Award Commitee is seeking nominations for the 2012 Educator of the Year.
Education Week is May 7 to May 11 and what better way to celebrate than to recognize an outstanding educator in Hastings and Prince Edward County.

Students, colleagues, parents, community partners and the general public are invited to submit nominations for any person who has rendered meritorious service to education in Hastings and/or Prince Edward County. The nominee must be active in education during the current year.

Nominations should be submitted on the nomination form provided below. A copy can be downloaded or obtained by contacting the Education Centre. Nominations must be submitted no later than April 19, 2012 to the Education Week Committee, in care of Albert College, 160 Dundas Street West, Belleville, Ontario K8P 1A6.

The 2012 Educator of the Year will be presented the Sir Mackenzie Bowell Award at a public reception on May 10, 2012 from 4 – 5:30 p.m. at the Bay of Quinte Country Club, 1830 Old Hwy#2, Belleville.

Sir Mackenzie Bowell (1823 – 1917) was a strong supporter of education and an active promoter of Hastings County. Bowell was elected to the Belleville Board of Education and served as chairperson of that board from 1856 to 1867. He served as editor and proprietor of The Intelligencer for many years and helped form the Belleville Board of Trade (Chamber of Commerce) in 1865. In his editorials, he stressed education as a key to development and championed the growth of Belleville and Hastings County as a whole. Politically, he distinguished himself as a federal cabinet member, a senator, and Canada’s fifth prime minister (1894 – 1896).
