Opioid information session to be held in Picton

In response to the success of two Opioid Information Sessions held in May, in Belleville and Bancroft, and significant community interest, Hastings Prince Edward Public Health (HPEPH) will be hosting two additional Opioid Information Sessions, in Picton and Quinte West.

The sessions are intended to provide parents and caregivers with information to help keep people safe from opioids and other drugs.

The HPEPH reports illicit Fentanyl has been found within the region, in a variety of fake prescription pills, as well as hidden in other street drugs such as cocaine, crystal meth, heroin, and marijuana.

It notes illicit Fentanyl is known to be deadly in small amounts, making the risk of overdosing extremely high. Together with community partners, HPEPH will provide parents and caregivers with information about local risks and resources related to opioid use, and suggested approaches to reduce the occurrence of teen overdose.

Opioid Information Sessions will be taking place Monday, June 12 at St. Gregory Catholic School in Picton and on Thursday, June 15 at the Trent Port Marina in Quinte West.

Presentations by health professionals and community partners will begin at 6:30 pm and will include:
an introduction and overview of opioids and illicit Fentanyl;
an overview of Naloxone, Naloxone kits and opioid overdose;
perspective from local police of what they are seeing in our community and an overview of parental responsibility and liability when teens are partying in the home,
how to talk to kids about substances and substance misuse; and lastly,
community resources available to support teens and families in Hastings and Prince Edward Counties.

Various community organizations will be present, beginning at 6pm, to discuss their services with attendees. Naloxone kits will also be available to those interested, and training to properly administer Naloxone will be provided with the kits.
