Panther basketball team shines at school showcase

The PECI Panthers Senior Boys basketball team competed at the Small School Showcase in Burlington on the weekend.

“The tournament was an “invite-only” tournament that featured some of the best ‘A’ and ‘AA’ schools from around the province,” said coach Rob Garden. “The boys were seeded second out of 16 teams entering the tournament, but the boys knew that despite garnering a high seed, they would still need to play hard against some very good competition from around the province.”

The Coach’s game reports:

Game 1 vs Lester B. Pearson from Burlington:

After a three hour car ride, the guys came out flat.  LBP played a very aggressive style of defence and our guards struggled early on to get the offence started.  Luckily the boys defence, which has been a focus all season, kept them in the game until they started to find the bottom of the hoop.  In the second half, the boys pulled away and put it in cruise control to win the game 47 – 33.

Game 2 vs St. Andrew’s College from Aurora:

Moving to the championship side of the draw, the boys matched up with an extremely athletic and aggressive team from the all boys private school in Aurora.  This was by far the best team that the boys have faced all year, and they played nervous for the first half.  St. Andrew’s controlled the tempo of the game pushing the ball up the court and scoring easily.  At half, the message to the guys was to start playing our style of basketball and not play scared.  We started to play much better, but it was too little too late and we lost the game 49 – 21.

Game 3 vs Perth DCI from Perth:

Perth is the AA OFSAA host this year, and this was the second time we played them.  The boys wanted to beat Perth for the second time and leave the tournament with 2 wins.  Unfortunately, Perth had the hot hand in the 1st quarter and outscored us 19 – 10.  Bob Wilson put the team on his back and scored all 10 points in the first quarter.  We knew it would be a tough game and we talked before the game about responding to adversity.  Our guys stayed true to our game plan and continued to grind out each possession.  By the end of the 4th quarter we were down 39 – 35 and we told the boys that it was time to crank it up a notch at both ends of the floor.  Morgan Johnson took over the game scoring seven of his game high 17 points in the quarter to lead his team to a comeback 51 – 46. victory.

Morgan Johnson was named tournament MVP, while Jamie Ferguson earned the hardest working player award.

With the win the Panthers’ record sits at 26 wins and only seven losses.  The boys start Bay of Quinte playoffs Tuesday at 5pm at PECI vs SPSS.  Community members are encouraged to come and watch the exciting action.
