Panthers-to-be take in first Academic Olympics at PECI

Prince Edward Collegiate Institute welcomed 200 students from Pinecrest, Sophiasburgh and Queen Elizabeth elementary schools to its first Academic Olympics on Tuesday.

The Grades 6 – 8 students participated in a variety of competitions in the library lab, gymnasium, classrooms and in the upper back field, guided by more than 60 PECI students acting in leadership roles.

Queen Elizabeth School Principal Paul Pickard and PECI teacher Rob Garden organized the event.

Paul Pickard, principal at Queen Elizabeth, and Rob Garden, teacher of math, business and technology programs at PECI, organized the event.

“We got together a few months ago to plan a great day of fun and learning,” said Pickard. “Our day is about the Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board competencies, with a focus on critical thinking, creative thinking, collaboration and communication.”

Students followed a rotating agenda to move around the school for break-out sessions, followed by a half-hour lunch, before returning to their groups for more activities.

“We’re really excited to have you here,” said Rob Garden, welcoming the students. “Our goal is for you to leave here today with a big smile on your face, and to have fun.”

Sessions included math, science, coding, mazes, and game challenges with a focus on collaboration and communication among team members.

Students from those schools will meet again in September if the Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board approves proposed school consolidation and closures at its June meeting. Queen Elizabeth Public School in Picton is presented to form a kindergarten to Grade 6 school, while Grade 7 and 8 students will attend PECI, creating a Grade 7 to 12 school. Effective September 2018, PECI would become a kindergarten to Grade 12 school.

Students played a ‘get to know you’ game before heading out in their groups.

Team members race to the shed to discover the next clue to solve.

Team members study the colours and patterns of the crayons to communication their replication by others at another station using only words.

Students at a science challenge to build the tallest free-standing tower using straws and tape. It must balance a ping pong ball.
