PEC OPP receive complaints of fraud where victims lost money

Prince Edward County OPP have received complaints of two different kinds of fraud in the past few days.

The first involved a purchase on Kijiji of a snow blower where the victim sent a large sum of money to purchase the unseen item. The victim since learned the seller was located in Africa, and has not received his snow blower.

The second involved a male receiving a call from a fraudster posing as a lawyer advising that his son was being held in custody and he needed to send money to have him released from jail. The victim in this matter has been defrauded out of $3,000.

PEC OPP Constable Kim Guthrie advises the public to be diligent when receiving unusual, or suspicious, phone calls. She also encourages internet users to research thoroughly prior to releasing personal information, or sending money to unknown parties, for unconfirmed emergent situations or for items being purchased over the internet.

  1. Fred Flinstone says:

There are a lot of good deals on African snowblowers.

  2. Christine Elsbury says:

Fist of all people on Kijiji don’t normally pay ahead that’s E-bay and that kind of site. Second you always ask where the seller is to know where to go and last the seller has to let Kijiji know there address and they normally do an address match but it is up to those who use the site to monitor it because after the accept you on it they no longer monitor that site.
I would have been calling my son to verify his location. period
