PECI Environmental students clean up with e-cycling event

Students in the Environmental Club at Prince Edward Collegiate Institute filled a transport trailer with electronic waste Saturday, behind the school.

Community members who dropped off unwanted, outdated or broken electronics waste, old tires and scrap metal free of charge, were invited to offer donations for the Loyalist Humane Society.

The event is held annually in partnership with the Ontario Electronics Stewardship which oversees the drop-off, dismantling, processing and recycling.

Once the items are collected and sorted, they arrive at an OES approved recycling facility where materials are separated to recover elements such as metals, plastics and glass to be processed into new products.

While recycling knowledge is mainstream, “e-cycling”, the OES has learned, still requires promotion and awareness.

OES found that just one in five people aged 18-29 reported recycling out-of-use electronics in the past year, despite a full 80 per cent saying they would recycle a water bottle. Phones and devices tend to end up stockpiled in shoe boxes and closets.

“We were struck by the fact that millennials are generally passionate about the environment and recycling other items, so there’s a tremendous education opportunity,” said Melanie Wilde, of OES.
