The PECI Sr Girls basketball team beat All-Saints Catholic Secondary School 31-30 to win the gold medal at the St. Matthews Fall Classic Tournament in Ottawa on the weekend.

Vanessa Willis scored 20 pts and was named championship game MVP.

“After playing five games in three days it was a real battle but the girls hung tough down the stretch and found the will to win,” said coach Rob Garden. “We played as a team all weekend and the girls should be very proud of their accomplishment.”

Their next league game is Tuesday at PECI vs Nicholson. Tip off is at 5:30pm.

Garden provides tournament game re-caps below (followed by the What’s Happening weekly report):

G1 vs. All Saints (Ottawa): 50-48 loss in OT
– Playing the most aggressive team of the year so far, our girls matched the All Saints intensity and jumped out a quick 12 – 6 lead after the first quarter. However, All Saints battled back to take a 24 – 23 lead at half. Similar to the first half, the 3rd and 4th quarters were back and forth and the game was tied 41 – 41 at the buzzer. In overtime, All Saints hit two quick three pointers and it was too much of a deficit to overcome. We lost the game 50 – 48. Kylie Moyer had 14 while Vanessa Willis chipped in with 11.

G2 vs. Centre Hasings (Madoc): 35-17 win
– The girls stepped up their intensity and used full court pressure to stymie their Bay of Quinte rivals from Madoc. The girls led from tip to final buzzer. Vanessa Willis had 12 while Hailey Van Rossum and Kylie Moyer each had 8.

G3 vs Superior HS (Thunder Bay): 39-16 win
– Playing their third game of the tournament, the girls were up against a top team from the north. However, their aggressive defensive style and transition offence was too much for the team from Thunder Bay. Vanessa Willis led all scorers with 14, Hailey Van Rossum had 10 and Kylie Moyer had 8.

Semi finals vs. College St. Alexandre (Gatineau): 44-37 win
– Playing at 8am is never easy, and both teams got off to a slow start with the Panthers holding a 16 – 15 edge at half time. After the break the girls found some energy and started to take over the game. Hailey Van Rossum hit two three pointers and the girls fed off of that energy. Hannah Smith had her best game of the year scoring 12 points and leading the team to a 44 – 37 win. Hannah was named semi-finals game MVP.

Championship game vs. All Saints (Ottawa): 30 – 31 win
– In a rematch of our first game, the girls were determined to get payback. Both teams were playing their fifth game in three days so there were a lot of tired legs on the court. However, Vanessa Willis put the team on her back and scored 12 points in the first half to carry her team to an 18 – 12 lead at the break. Unfortunately, the Panthers couldn’t sustain the pressure and All Saints clawed their way back in the game. A defensive breakdown allowed the All Saints to score with only 30 seconds left to take a 30 – 29 lead. However, like she had done all game, Vanessa took the game over and scored the winning layup with only 10 seconds to go. From there, the Panthers used their defensive pressure to shut the All Saints down and captured their first GOLD medal of the season! Vanessa was named game MVP for her 20 point performance.
