PECI’s Sara Evans wins trip to Canada-wide Science Fair

The County’s Sara Evans will join this year’s Canada-wide science fair team in New Brunswick next month, with her project ‘Dominant and Recessive Inheritance of Hair Texture’.

The Grade 11 Prince Edward Collegiate student was one of five students from the region who will be headed to Fredericton as winners of the grand prize at the Quinte Science and Technology Fair held at Loyalist College on the weekend. She also won a Loyalist College entrance scholarship award for most deserving senior project. The $1,000 would be paid as a tuition credit should she register there in the next two years.

Joining Evans on the team are eighth grade winners Alexandria Schneider (Bred to Serve), from Albert College; Meera Moorthy (Finding a Natural Fertilizer) and Aiden Haddad (Pendulum Transportation System), from Harry J. Clarke Public School Destinations and Holly Tetzlaff, (Small But Mighty – Environmental Impact of Microbeads) Grade 9 at ENSS.

There were 180 students in Grades 4 to 12 competing in the 56th annual event. More than 130 judges evaluated and encouraged the students.

Winning a first place prize in Grade 4, Group 1, for  KA-BOOM! were Sage Noxon, Kayla Vallance of Athol-South Marysburgh Public School.

“I continue to be amazed at the level of scientific thinking and curiosity of the students in our region,” said Jo-Anne Peckham, Co-Chair of the Quinte Regional Science and Technology Fair.

The Q.R.S.T.F. committee also gave special thanks to the Wellington Rotary Club for continued support of the fair.
