Pedestrians have the right of way

Before the tourist season gets really under way I would like people to remember what the cross walks are about in Picton.  I write about this only two weeks after I was almost hit at one.

Yes, I am well aware that Picton Main is a very busy street and you have many people who will cross the road, not at a cross walk, not checking or waiting for traffic; this was not one of those cases. I was at the corner of Ross and Main. The traffic was at its usual mid-afternoon, busy.  I press the button at the cross walk; wait for the lights to flash and the traffic to stop. Is it safe for me to cross? I would think so, drivers in both directions have acknowledged me and stopped, I proceed to cross.

Ok maybe I should have been pointing my finger, alas I was not. I and another gentleman were at that point crossing the road myself on my way to the building department, the other gentleman on his own business and low and behold the white car in the east bound lane started to proceed. This might not have been an issue had I not been about a third of the way across the road and almost in front the lady’s car. Remember people all traffic had stopped including this woman in the white car. Fortunately I was not hit, but I did not get the license plate or I would have reported this instance. If this had been a young family, a child, your friend, your Mom or Dad,  how would you feel?

When you see the lights flashing at one of the cross walks in Picton you must stop if it’s safe. You must wait for the pedestrian to cross. They have the right of way and you must wait.
