Poopsie Picklepants isn’t always able to make it out to the surprise semi-annual girls weekends but she was delighted to be at this spring’s gathering in Prince Edward County for the Great Canadian Cheese Festival.

MiceflipflopsOutfitted with mouse hats, mousetrap and cheese flip-flops, cheesy earrings and related accessories,  13 long-time friends and family members made their way among more than 4,000 visitors to this year’s fourth annual event at the Picton fairgrounds.

The group –  including Loopy Gigglesniffer, Zippy Bubblelips and others whose names were generated by a children’s book (Captain Underpants) name changer sequence, did not know their destination for Saturday would be the Cheese Festival. They arrived from all areas of the province, and Calgary.

“Everybody loves cheese,” said Picklepants, a.k.a. Grace Stafford, of London. “The assortment and variety of things here today is wonderful and is just part of a whole weekend of fun for the group” named CLUB M (Crazy Ladies Unaccompanied by Males).

The weekends have been organized twice a year for the past 15 years by Sharilee Pyke and Lorri Huppert, who guide, but never tell attendees specifically what they will be doing on their weekend.

“The weekends evolve as we go. Originally, we are sent a list of things to bring, or wear but we don’t know what we will be doing,” said Stafford. “For example, we see eagles singing on our name badges. We know that eagles like to eat mice, and we’re dressed like mice at the festival, but we don’t know any more. I looked on the internet once I found out we were going to meet in Picton and figured out that after the Cheese Festival we were going to the Eagles Tribute Concert at the Regent Theatre. Most of the girls don’t know that yet. The weekend events are always a surprise and we always have a great time.”

Three dozen cheese makers from coast-to-coast served up more than 125 artisan and award-winning cheeses. The Canadian Cheese of the Year and many other prize winners were in the spotlight.

Joining the cheese makers were artisan food producers, small batch wineries and craft breweries, exhibitors and vendors in the new Artisan Foods Pavilion, the Curling Club, the Crystal Palace and on the grounds.

New for this year is the sale of VQA wines as part of a government program pilot project to promote locally-grown wines.

Special events over the weekend such as the Gastronomy on the Farm with chef Jamie  Kennedy and Cooking with Cheese were sold out early. Tutored tastings and cheese tours were also full of satiated guests.
