Picton Main project will go ahead in stages

Council awarded a $4.4 million Picton Main Street project tender to Kingston’s Taggart Construction at Tuesday’s night’s meeting.

Efforts are being made to accommodate Picton’s busy tourism months and complete the project in stages to minimize disruption.

Grant funding of $2 million has been received from the Ontario Community Infrastructure Fund but the project must be complete by Dec. 31, 2016 to qualify.

One bid received earlier this year was significantly higher than estimated, forcing a revision and re-issuing of the tender last month.

The project includes replacement of the existing watermain and sewer on Picton Main Street between Chapel and Bridge streets as well as replacement of individual water and sewer services to properties fronting the work.

Following talks with the Picton Business Improvement Association, the scope of the work was enlarged to include the replacement of existing curb, gutters and sidewalks for the full length of the project.

Of the five bids received, the lowest, and recommended tender is from Taggart Construction ranging in price on four options for the project from $4,321,968 to $4,622,967.

This is a good thing. But I don’t see how they will be complete by December 31st in order to get the funding if they take July & August off.
