Picton No Frills co-owner helps prevent fraud attempt

A Prince Edward County resident was spared the cost of being scammed Tuesday.

The individual was at No Frills in Picton attempting to purchase a number of gift cards when the grocery store’s co-owner, Andrew Januszkiewicz stepped in to assess the situation.

“Andrew, noted this and took the time to speak to the individual to find out the gift cards were to be sent in exchange for computer repairs. Andrew assisted the individual in identifying this scam and successfully prevented the individual from being victimized,” said Const. Aaron Miller, Prince Edward OPP Community Safety Officer.

Miller notes the actions help highlight the importance of store owners and employees to also be aware of frauds and scams to help avoid further victimization.

As a reminder, here are some red flags to identify frauds and scams:
Request for gift cards or cryptocurrency
Urgent request for action or information
Request for banking information
Unsolicited attempts at selling products or services

“Remember: legitimate agencies will never pressure you for information over the phone or demand money immediately,” said Miller.

Prince Edward County OPP continue to remind individuals to be aware of ongoing frauds and scams.

“March is fraud month and there is no better time to ask everyone to conduct research, ask questions and take a minute before sending gift cards or money. Knowledge is Power.”

I was a victim of a similar scam several years ago. It ended up costing me a lot of money. So glad to hear of the intervention of this store owner. Just this week I have received at least 6 calls about my computer. But I am not falling for it a second time.

That’s what makes Andrew one of the best NoFrills operators in the country. Picton is lucky to have both him and Emily.

Thumbs up for Andrew and his quick reaction to a scam.
