Picton to show its Pride

Picton will get a lot more colourful for Pride Week June 1-8 and keep it that way throughout the summer.

“The newly rebranded Bay of Quinte Pride has been working with the Picton BIA to bring more Pride programming to the County, in order to incorporate the entire Bay of Quinte Region in the celebrations,” said Sarah Doiron,
BIA Manager.

In 2017 Prince Edward County won a LGBTQ+ tourism marketing award from Travel Gay Canada.

“The BIA decided that to continue with the message of inclusivity, it would be appropriate to purchase pride banners to show residents and visitors alike this is a community that welcomes diversity,” she said.

The pride banners – plain rainbow flags – will be hung on Main Street, interspersed with the Picton banner for the duration of the summer décor season.

Nat Wollenberg has been successfully running Pride events at both the County Canteen and the 555 Brewing Co. for a few years. Until 2019, those were the only Pride activities in town.

“Now there is a week’s worth of Pride activities in Picton, starting with a Pride Market in Benson Park from 10am to 4pm on June 1st, which will include the opening ceremonies for the Bay of Quinte Pride Celebrations at 11am.”

Other activities include a dance party, a queer yoga class, a queer film at the Regent Theatre, along with Queer Karaoke at the Canteen, and the 555 Pride Patio Party.

“We’re ecstatic that this is happening! We have such a thriving queer community here in the County and having a County Pride is long overdue. We’re finally catching up,” said Megan Marie Gates, co-owner of Wild Heart Healing Arts, and host of the Pride Dance Party and Queer yoga class.

As for the BIA, “we just happened to fall into the role of connecting the dots between community organizations and individuals who wanted to see this happen. Now that those connections have been made, we’re excited to see the LGBTQ+ community take ownership of this event,” said Dorion.
