Picton’s Casey Ward to Women’s Amateur Championship

Local golfer Casey Ward last week won the Kingston District Women’s Golf Championship played at Barcovan Golf Club July 6th.
The tournament attracted close to 60 golfers from around the district. Casey’s score on a scorching hot day was 39-41, her 80 shot total edging out Allison Harrison of the Glen Lawrence club of Kingston by a single stroke. The two golfers were playing in the same group. Casey claimed victory in a tense finish by getting up and down from the edge of the green on the last hole.
Casey, who is Club Champion at Picton Golf and Country Club, as well as a member of the Queen’s University Golf Team, will be playing in the Ontario Women’s Amateur Championship in Collingwood next week. She will be representing this year’s Kingston District Amateur team as part of the competition.
District teams from around Ontario compete for the first two days of this 54 hole event. The top three scores of each four woman team for Day 1 and Day 2 count towards a total for the first two days. The team with the lowest total score is declared winner of the team event. The final 18 holes are played by those individuals who make the cut, with the low score for 54 holes determining the Ontario Women’s Champion.
The event at Barcovan was one of three local tournaments that are part of the process for declaring district teams for 2011 Provincial competitions. Napanee hosted the first event and Picton will host the third. Scores from this year’s Ontario Amateur Championship and the Canadian Amateur Championship can also be used as part of the qualification process. Players can use their best two scores from these five events to earn a place on a team, at the Junior, Senior and Amateur levels. Each team will represent Kingston District in their respective Provincial Championships next year.
Casey is to be congratulated for her fine showing, and has best wishes from her Club for a successful tournament in Collingwood.
