Picton’s splash pad officially under way

Years of determination, support from the community and many sponsors came to fruition Thursday as a bulldozer roared into life and the new splash pad at the Picton Fairgrounds was under way.

Supporters surrounded co-chairpersons Susan Quaiff and Phil St. Jean at the site to formally mark the occasion with a photograph. The Kinsmen also presented the $10,000 the club promised to deliver as soon as the shovel was in the ground.

Though Quaiff first imagined the project in 2001, fundraising began in 2015 and more than $250,000 has been raised. County businessman Michael Hymus delivered half the fundraising and since, numerous service clubs, businesses, organizations and individuals have supported and donated funds.

Scott Wentworth, committee member and designer of the nautical themed 600-square-foot pad said completion is expected for early August, give or take the number of rain days. The committee had been hoping for a July opening but Wentworth noted many suppliers were backed up on orders from special Canada 150 projects.

The splash pad, to be located beside the skate park, will include a method of re-circulating water in a prototype ‘bioswale’ system that removes pollution and silt from runoff water with slightly sloped drainage along a wide and shallow ditch. The bioswale wraps around the area, treats the water, then returns it to the system.
