Bronze finish at Regional Pitch, Hit and Run

UPDATE: Wellington’s Shae-Lynn Simpson finished third at the Pitch-Hit-and-Run Regionals in Port Hope yesterday and won’t advance to the finals at Rogers Centre in Toronto. Her father Dave says she hit the ball about 75-feet farther than the other girls….but, the pitching held her back. She isn’t used to using a softball as she is a baseball player.

Wellington’s Shae-Lynn Simpson had defended her title as champion at the local Pitch, Hit and Run – albeit in a different category this year – to move on to the regional  Pitch, Hit and Run competition at Port Hope.
The Aquafina Major League Baseball Pitch, Hit and Run skills competition provides boys and girls ages 7-14 the chance to advance through four levels of competition, including team championship events at Major League ballparks. The competition this year promoted a new girls softball division with winners awarded separately from the boys’ baseball division.
That didn’t sit well with Simpson, a talented league baseball player, who doesn’t play softball. She had hoped she would again compete with the boys as she did in her triumph last year, but with the new rules in place she would not have her scores officially recorded and would not be able to move on in the competition.
She reported to friends and fans on Facebook that she “had a lot of fun” at the annual event in Wellington and is looking forward to competition in Port Hope.
In the meantime, the Simpson family is considering a trip to Cooperstown after connecting with the organization BaseBall for All.
Its founder, Justine Siegal, has coached  and played baseball on five continents. She is the first woman to coach men’s professional baseball and is the only female currently coaching collegiate baseball level.
“If you tell a girl she can’t play baseball…what else will she believe she can’t do,” Siegal says on her website. “Believe! Girls do Play Baseball!”
Siegal has invited Shae-Lynn to try out for the WBL Sparks, a team that competes annually in the Cooperstown Dreams Park tournament in Cooperstown, NY.

And the winners are…
