Prince Edward air cadets put training skills into action

The 851 Prince Edward Squadron Royal Canadian Air Cadets took to the wilds at Beaver Meadow Conservation area to test skills they’ve studied throughout the year.

Training officer Mike DeCastris said the training exercises are part of the mandatory training program and test cadets on leadership, instructional and survival skills, as well as activities like orienteering, radio communications and first aid.

This was the second of two FTX the squadron takes part in each year and serves as a confirmation of teaching points that cadets receive throughout the training year.

“All FTX provide a real-time forum for cadets to practice duties required for a successful field operation,” he said. “Under the direction from senior cadet instructors, all cadets perform activities including tent setup and shelter building, meal preparation, drinking water access, operation and maintenance of camp equipment like portable stoves, lanterns and communication equipment, and ensure safety and security of personnel.”

DeCastris notes it is also an excellent opportunity for team building experience and offers a chance for senior cadets to perfect their leadership skills. This particular exercise also focused on training in orienteering with a map and compass, group radio communication and code breaking techniques.

“Although the weather was a bit on the damp side, the entire unit had a fun and memorable weekend which ended with all cadets successfully completing this portion of their training year.”
