Prom Project at PECI provides formal wear free of charge

PECI will help students get to their proms and graduations in style this year with a Prom Project event Friday, April 20 until 6 p.m. in the school auditorium.
The Hastings and Prince Edward Learning Foundation, the charitable arm of the Hastings Prince Edward District School Board, has launched a new project this year that will assist elementary and secondary students with selecting formal wear, free of charge, for their graduations and proms.
“Formal wear will be available for both girls and boys, and the selection is astounding,” says Caryn Phoenix-Renz, guidance counsellor at PECI. “There will also be a selection of shoes and bags available, as well as jewelry, donated by Leslie Snyder, owner of The Galloping Goat Gallery. It’s also a fabulous way to go green especially considering much of the formal wear was only worn once.”
In addition, Glenda Tracey from Shoppers Drug Mart Quinte Mall will be on hand to offer make up tips, and Marvin Chapman, of Flowers by Marvin will be standing by with displays of corsages to offer suggestions.
“Students and staff have worked very hard to make this event a success, as has the community which has donated a wonderful array of formal wear,” says Phoenix-Renz. “Scott’s General Store in Picton, Pierson’s Foodland in Wellington, and the Rossmore Stop provided drop off locations for Parson’s dry cleaners, which made sure each outfit was cleaned and ready to wear.”

In 1996 there was one little spirited gal out in southern BC (who now is a resident of Picton)canvassing for formal gowns for high school graduation…it took a bit of convincing of both fellow students and teachers at The Mennonie Educational Institue, but when 99% were convinced of the elegance of the coming event, expansion of delight occured…I’d like to think the gowns were recycled, as being good Mennonites thats the kind of thing we did…so its joyful to hear about PEC recycling gowns!
