Public invited to ‘Black Lives Matter’ demonstration Friday in Picton

A ‘Black Lives Matter’ demonstration is planned for downtown Picton Friday from 5:30-7:30 p.m.

Hosted by a County group focused on anti-racism called ‘All Welcome Here’, founded in 2019 by Judith Burfoot, a Black woman living and working in Prince Edward County.

She notes she saw the need for rural people of colour to have a space to connect and network. She also saw a need in the wider County community for anit-racism work. She notes about five per cent or approximately 1,250 people in Prince Edward County identify themselves as people of colour, (Indigenous, Black, Chinese, South Asian, Latin American) with further ethnic origins, according to the 2016 Census.

The public is invited to show up and stand in support of the cause. More than 300 people have joined the All Welcome Here Facebook page.

The group intends to have people line Main Street sidewalks in silent protest. Participants are asked to wear black, and a face mask, and bring signs.

Prince Edward OPP have also been invited to attend.

Event organizers will be present from 4:30 p.m. in orange vests to help find spots, offer support and ensure social distancing is maintained. Look for a chalked ‘X’ on the sidewalk.

The demonstration comes as communities across the continent are saddened and outraged by recent events in the United States, specifically the death of George Floyd, 46, who died May 25 in police custody. Demonstrations in cities across the US held to condemn racism and police abuses have been large and violent, though instances in the past few nights have been fewer than last weekend.

One of the huge questions coming from these tragic events is whether communities require the degree and numbers of policing. Much of this expense could be directed to homeless, poor and those requiring food,
