As feathered friends return to the County from their winter homes in Central and South America, the Prince Edward Point Bird Observatory (PEPtBO) is in full swing monitoring and collecting data on their migration.

May is Birding Month in the County and PEPtBO celebrates with opportunities to visit the observatory, enjoy educational programs, and to celebrate the release of two new books on birds.

The Prince Edward County Spring Birding Festival will be held this year from May 11 to May 20. The festival includes a variety of guided birding hikes in the South Shore IBA and throughout the County. Both the Prince Edward County Field Naturalists and Sandbanks Provincial Park are partners in festival activities. Nature Matters! in hard copy and on PEPtBO’s website (www.peptbo.ca) contains information on all the activities for all ages and hikes for all levels of birding expertise.

NatureHood is PEPtBO’s outdoor education program that hosts classes from elementary and secondary schools with programs geared to curriculum topics.

“Through NatureHood we welcome annually over 300 students at the Bird Observatory,” said Peter Fuller, PEPtBO president. “Teachers are encouraged to contact us about a class visit and transportation stipends are available.”

Again this year PEPtBO volunteers have designed and produced Nature Matters!, a unique booklet that describes a whole season of public events to help more County residents and visitors celebrate, appreciate and protect the County’s natural habitats.

“This is truly a labour of love for volunteers Borys Holowacz and Cheryl Chapman who together contact organizations about events, secure advertisers, design the booklet and make sure it is distributed,” said Fuller. “We owe them a true debt of gratitude for their hard work in producing this important vehicle introducing more people to the richness that the great outdoors in the County offers.”

New this year is For the Birds, the chapbook of poems and images created by County and visiting writers and local photographers. It’s currently available online at www.peptbo.ca.

On May 11 at 3 pm everyone is invited to the launch of the print version of For the Birds at the Picton Library. There will be readings and presentation of prizes to the two winning poets of the contest associated with the book’s publication.

On May 18 at 11 a.m. Mike Burrell will be at the Bird Observatory signing copies of his essential new guide Best Places to Bird in Ontario co-authored with his brother Ken Burrell.

Visitors are always welcome at the Bird Observatory. Weather permitting migration monitoring goes on daily from a half hour after sunrise for six hours, until May 31.

Information about all activities is also online at www.peptbo.ca
