Record 37 new COVID-19 cases; most in young age groups

Another record-setting day for COVID-19 cases as 37 new were reported Monday in Hastings Prince Edward counties – 26 of which are in the 19 and under to 29 age groups.
It is the sixth day double-digit increases have been recorded. The region’s active case load is now 137. The seven-day case rate per 100,000 population has jumped to 68.8
The new cases include 17 in Belleville, 13 in Quinte West, three each in Prince Edward County and Centre Hastings and one in North Hastings.
Most of the new cases are reported to be with those aged 19 and under to age 29 with transmissions cited as close contact, or pending. There are 19 cases related to four outbreaks in Quinte West and Belleville.
There are now 51 active cases in Trenton, 48 in Belleville, 15 in Centre Hastings, 11 in Prince Edward County, eight in Deseronto, three in Tyendinaga and one in North Hastings.
Four people are hospitalized and one person is in ICU. There are 61 cases related to variants of concern. The total case load since the pandemic began is now at 609.
There have been 33,951 vaccine doses administered – 7,206 in the last seven days.

Re the 37 cases reported on Monday, I had speculated that the much increased number might be two day’s worth of cases due to delays related to the long weekend. And sure enough, the next day (Tue) had “only” 19 cases.
A full lockdown should have happened before things became this bad. The writing was on the wall. The lockdown we have at present is not strict enough to do any good.
Shut it all down excepting groceries and pharmacy. Mass vaccination at all workplaces. The merry go round partial closures do not work. Business will recover only when the variant is under control. Failing that this will continue on.
I agree that essential workers should be a priority – but I believe both they and seniors can be done with proper planning and delivery. Right now I don’t get the sense that anything that the province is doing has been well thought out.
Tonight the whole Ontario medical professionals are calling for a stay at home order, closing all non essential services. Province is on the brink.
It may be more strategic to get the vaccines to factory and essential workers than seniors as the variants are hitting them hard.
I am now of the opinion that Wave 3 is going to be far worse than what anyone expected. The numbers for Ontario are going through the roof – another almost 6000 over the last 2 days. Hastings Prince Edward is seeing numbers like never before. I am not the type to panic, but I am the type to put some of the facts together – we need to lockdown even tighter AND our Public Health Dept. – with the help of the Province needs to pick up the speed of vaccine delivery here in PEC. If the City of Toronto can deliver well over 500,000 vaccines in a couple of weeks, why can’t we get 24,000 done faster than what we are? Here, we have one of the highest number of seniors per capita in the province and the vaccines roll-out is slow – not good when COVID variants are at our doorstep.
