Remember loved ones on Decoration Day – June 7

Decoration-Day-2014-s

During the early 1900s, it was customary for families to come to Glenwood for a special day of remembrance. Flowers and wreaths were placed on the graves of loved ones, prayers were said, and many visitors took a quiet stroll around the park-like grounds.

Decoration Day has been reintroduced at Glenwood Cemetery and is gaining appreciation from many who have lost loved ones.

Decoration Day takes place on the first Sunday in June to honour those who rest in Glenwood. This day provides an opportunity for people to pay their respect to family members and friends by visiting their graves and sharing memories. It is an occasion to recall and celebrate the lives of Glenwood’s residents.

This year, Decoration Day is Sunday, June 7. Visitors will be welcomed to the grounds by the music of guitarist Ken Hudson. At 2 p.m. everyone will gather in the Stone Chapel for a memorial service conducted by Reverend Audrey Whitney and Helma Oonk. Lorain Sine will sing and play guitar. Following the service there will be a guided walking tour of the victorian cemetery.

The public is welcome join the celebration of the lives of those who have gone before us. Visitors may bring flowers to decorate graves or chose to purchase flowers available on site. Glenwood offers a live flower program where geraniums may be purchased. They will be watered and maintained by staff throughout the season.

Everyone is welcome.  Refreshments will be served in the chapel.
