Renaming lookout honours former mayor James Taylor

Council has agreed the Millennium Lookout at the Heights should be named after the late James Taylor, the first mayor of the amalgamated County and instigator of the project in 1999.

Councillor Phil St.-Jean requested support for the recognition at Thursday’s Committee of the Whole meeting, thanking Taylor for his long-time commitment and dedication to politics, and the County.

Taylor died last month, at 92. In 1971 he served as MPP for the riding of Prince Edward Lennox and served in the legislature for 17 years; was a cabinet minister for Community and Social Services and the Ministry of Energy. In 1998 he took office as the first mayor of the newly-amalgamated Prince Edward County and served two terms before retirement in 2003.

The Millennium Lookout project, said St.-Jean, was proposed by Taylor as a project of lasting community interest and celebration of the coming millennium.

The final approval for the renaming of the lookout to ‘The James A. Taylor Millennium Lookout’ comes to council Nov. 10.

What in good conscience was designed to lower divisiveness may in fact added to such. There is so much more that this community can accomplish without worrying about our Father of Confederation.

A fitting tribute to a fine gentleman who served this county well.
