Respiratory outbreak at H.J. McFarland

H.J. McFarland Memorial Home is currently experiencing a facility-wide respiratory outbreak.

Family and friends of residents and other guests can still visit, but the administration strongly urges visitors to follow best practices for hand hygiene to avoid contracting and transmitting the infection.

In Ontario, based on data from Public Health Ontario Laboratory, the most common respiratory viruses causing respiratory infection outbreaks are influenza A and B, entero/rhinovirus, coronavirus, RSV, parainfluenza, and metapneumovirus.

People with a cold or fever should avoid visiting the home during the respiratory outbreak, if possible.

Respiratory outbreaks can be declared over if there is no new case eight days after the onset of symptoms of the last case.
