ROC brings Triple Power to the children

Prince Edward County children are between a ROC and a good place with the launch of the new Triple Power Project.
The Triple Power Project is the Recreation Outreach Centre’s (ROC) new wellness program for boys and girls ages 9-13 offered after school in six-week sessions. The program addresses key priority areas of healthy living: physical activity, healthy eating and mental health promotion.
“The goal of the Triple Power Program is to improve youth knowledge of healthy habits, increase their daily physical activities and give youth the opportunity to participate in creative arts while interacting positively with their peers,” said Darlene Thompson, the ROC’s executive director.
The ROC and its community partners – the Hastings Prince Edward Health Unit, the municipality and Children’s Mental Health Services – met Wednesday to celebrate receiving $30,000 funding from the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport’s Healthy Communities fund to launch the project in local schools. They attended the Let’s Cook program now under way at Queen Elizabeth Public School in Picton and observed participants prepare a fruit salad and bake black bean brownies.
The school has 47 participants signed up in the three programs. The Triple Power Program will be starting at Kente and Sophiasburgh public schools after Christmas at no cost to participants and their families.
“The objective of Triple Power is to demonstrate how eating well, keeping fit, being creative and forming positive relationships promotes a healthy lifestyle,” said Katy McIntyre, program co-ordinator. “This program will empower young people and give them healthy living tools for a lifetime.”

The ROC is a non-profit organization located at 33 Nery Ave., Picton which, for the past 11 years has provided activities and programs for children and teens. The youth centre has a gymnasium, arcade room, lounge and kitchen facilities. Staff also serve as mentors to youth and facilitate positive discussion in a safe environment.
