Romance and murder on Main Street – summer theatre in Picton

Main Street Collective presents a trio of original Canadian plays in the heart of Picton during August.

Award-winning playwright Dave Carley has returned to Prince Edward County. His previous works produced locally are Splinter in the Heart (Festival Players 2016) and Test Drive (Festival Players 2014). In addition, the County’s Krista Dalby presents a reading of her 2015 hit Unjustly.

Midnight Madness
Midnight Madness August 9 to 12 @ 8pm, Aug. 12 @ 2pm
One of Canada’s most-produced plays, 2017 marks the 30th anniversary of this delightful romantic comedy. It’s minutes before midnight at Bloom’s Furniture’s going-out-of-business sale and Wesley is closing up for the last time when Anna, a blast from his high school past, trips up the stairs… Midnight Madness is a play that will delight anyone who survived high school. Starring Sean Carthew, Michelle Langille and Andrew Perun, written by Dave Carley and directed by him with Glenda MacFarlane.

Two Ships Passing
Two Ships Passing August 16 to 19 @ 8pm, Aug. 19 @ 2pm
A minister and a judge decide to resume a relationship that ended badly a decade earlier. The judge’s son catches wind of the budding romance and he’s hell-bent on putting an end to it. A bubbly romantic comedy ensues, with lots of humour and commentary on the generation gap between boomers and millennials. Starring Drew Carnwath, Anne Page, and the County’s own Scott Kuipers, written by Dave Carley and directed by him with Glenda MacFarlane.

Unjustly (staged reading) August 14 7p.m.
Unjustly returns for one night only, unravelling the story of an infamous crime that gripped the County in 1883. The play looks back on the shooting death of Peter Lazier, the bungled forensic investigation that followed, and the trial and hanging of two men, leaving us to wonder: did justice prevail? The 2015 production was a smash-hit; don’t miss this special event featuring the County’s own Joan McBride and Scott Kuipers, written and directed by Krista Dalby.

TICKETS: available at Books & Company or (613) 532-6488. Midnight Madness & Two Ships Passing – $25; Saturday matinees are pay-what-you-can. Unjustly – no tickets necessary; pay-what-you-can at the door.

All performances at the Lipson Room, upstairs, Books & Company, 289 Main St, Picton
