Rural road work set to begin

Work on more than 46 km of rural roads is set to get underway in Prince Edward County.

The bulk of the work in 2025 is single surface treatment, also known as tar-and-chip, which is a single layer application. Single surface treatment is a preventative maintenance technique that is to extend the life of a surface-treated road surface that is still in good condition.

All of the work is scheduled to begin within the coming weeks with expected completion by the end of summer.

Twenty-four km of roads will receive a single surface treatment in 2025. Single surface treatment will occur on:
County Road 24 (Lighthall Road to Army Reserve Road)
Lucks Crossroad (County Road 8 to County Road 17)
Massassauga Road (County Road 28 to the end)
Sunrise Drive (Massassauga Road to the end)
Mitchells Crossroad (County Road 17 to County Road 13)
Old Cheese Factory Road (entire length)
Quick Short Road (County Road 35 to the end)
Walmsley Road (County Road 24 to Bond Road)

Double surface treatment involves rehabilitation of the road surface including pulverizing, base stabilization, and addition of new granular material, followed by a double layer of surface treatment and fog seal. This will occur on:
County Road 13 (Civic Address 3641 to Babylon Road at Civic Address 2775 County Road 13)
County Road 19 (Civic Address 538 to Cunningham Road at 1101 County Road 19)
County Road 35 (County Road 15 to Green Point Lane)

In addition, micro surfacing, another preventative maintenance technique that is used on asphalt road surfaces to restore the road surface and help prevent water from seeping into the road base, which causes deterioration, will be applied on:
County Road 12 (Ridge Road to County Road 18)
County Road 33 (Henderson Lane to Victoria Road)
County Road 4 (Civic Address 1119 to two km north)

In addition to surface treatment and micro surfacing, other contracted maintenance techniques, such as crack sealing and asphalt spot repairs, will also occur, along with regular maintenance work like street sweeping in settlement areas with curbs and gutters, gravel road resurfacing, and guide rail repairs.
