Safe drinking water project enters final phase for Mohawks of Bay of Quinte

Five long-term drinking water advisories in the Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte community will be lifted with the completion of the last of a multi-phase project.

Marc Miller, Minister of Indigenous Services, announced Thursday the government of Canada and the First Nation are contributing a total of $18.2 million for the project.

Mowhawks of the Bay of Quinte awarded the construction contract to Gordon Barr Limited, set to begin this week. The project includes extending the water mains from both the community’s and Deseronto’s water treatment plant, which will connect 86 existing homes and several of the community’s semi-public buildings.

Construction is expected to be complete by fall 2021, due to delays created by COVID-19.

Miller, in a press release, stated this is one of more than 600 water and wastewater projects throughout the country where infrastructure has been repaired, expanded, or replaced; training has been strengthened and additional funding for operations and maintenance is being allocated to communities.
