Christmas at Picton Harbour event cancelled due to rising COVID-19 cases

Last year’s Loch Sloy Santa Extravaganza brought Santa Claus to town for a drive-through parade. Creative talent from the Department of Illumination and Shatterbox Theatre added magical elements.

The new Christmas at the Harbour event to be held this weekend has been cancelled.

“Protecting our community is paramount, and the alarming trend lines with COVID-19 in our region has required immediate attention,” said Jennifer Litke, on behalf of host Tenacity Capital.

“Our team examined all possibilities and concluded that it was far more important to prevent any potential risk of community transmission, especially among our youngest population. …The team has worked tirelessly preparing for the event and have partnered with some really great organizations within our community to showcase the true spirit of Christmas; giving back to those in need.”

Donations that have already been collected through eventbrite.ca registration to benefit two local children and youth charities; the ROC and Raising a Village PEC will be refunded if requested by contacting Litke at jlitke@tenacityunite.ca. Donations will be matched by Tenacity Capital.

NOV. 30: A free fun family event is unfolding for Dec. 10-11 as Picton Marina operator Tenacity Capital is hosting Christmas at the Harbour.

The event kicks off with a tree lighting at 6 p.m. Dec. 10. Pre-registered visitors are invited to walk an enchanted path and view the Christmas displays presented by Shatterbox, The Department of Illumination and many other community organizations and businesses.

The journey along the path toward the North Pole will give children a chance to meet Santa and Mrs. Claus, all while maintaining a safe social distance. Parents are encouraged to capture the special moment with their personal cameras. Then, participants may conclude their journey with a warm beverage across the bridge, courtesy of the Picton Harbour Inn. The Reasons will provide live seasonal entertainment on the Friday evening.

“The harbour holds a strong personal connection to my past,” said CJ Thompson, CEO and Founder of Tenacity Capital. “In the chilly winter months, Picton Harbour was the place that I could always count on for a game of pickup with my friends, it was a place of community. When we look out there today, we know that this sense of place is starting to take shape with all the work that our team has been putting into the revitalization of the harbour front. Megan and I cannot think of a better reason to celebrate than Christmas, and I know it will only get bigger and better for all to enjoy in the years to come.”

The event is set for Friday, Dec. 10 from 6-10 p.m. and Saturday, Dec. 11 from 1-6 p.m, at the PEC Harbour located at 35 Bridge Street, Picton.

The event is free of charge but donations are encouraged to help support two local non-profit children’s charities – The ROC and Raising a Village PEC. Donations can be made online when reserving tickets, or in person, at the event entrance.

Local businesses and organizations are invited to join in to help create a magical and festive atmosphere with floats, lights, costumes and music to be set-up somewhere either near the shoreline, or around the property. A walking path will be mapped out for attendees to follow. Email event chair Jennifer Litke at jlitke@tenacityunite.ca or phone the office at 613-476-8019

Kudos to the organizers of this event for putting public safety first. It must have been a difficult decision after all the hard work that went into this project and the knowledge that so many were looking forward to it.
