Second Ice Box celebrates Art in the Heart of Winter

Prince Edward County plans to celebrate ‘Art in the Heart of Winter’ during the second annual Ice Box event in February.

Ice Box made its debut last year, a vision from the local ‘Department of Illumination’ group (founders of the Firelight Lantern Festival) to brighten up winter with a public art event. Local artist Krista Dalby is the brainchild of the unique event.

Taking place over the first two weekends in February at Macaulay Heritage Park in Picton, Ice Box is an outdoor arts experience with immersive art, live performances, group dances, and more.

Plans for programming over the two weekends includes performances by Juno Award winner Justin Rutledge, The Patron Saint of Objects Lost in Drawers by Birdbone Theatre, a presentation by Six String Nation, snow dances with choreographer Arwyn Carpenter, fire spinning and a flow workshop with Trellis Arts & Entertainment, a joyful community procession, maple taffy on snow and marshmallow roasts, and plenty of other wintry surprises.

At the heart of this winter event are five ‘ice boxes’, i.e. colourful wooden huts, each transformed into an interactive art installation led by local artists, in collaboration with community members of all ages.

This year’s five ice boxes include: STITCH by Nella Casson and guest artist Marion Casson (Nella’s mother), which fancifully recreates the inside of a train car while ruminating on the baggage we carry; MAP by Andrea Piller, who is working with local students and community elders to create layered text and mixed media collages for a collaborative map installation; PRINT by Chrissy Poitras and Genna Kusch, whose series of relief prints on the theme of migration are turned into intricate interactive pop-ups similar to childhood pop-up books; GROW by Susanne Larner, who has created a fantastical Victorian greenhouse, filled with plants, both real and those constructed from a variety of artistic media; and BE HERE NOW by Hri Neil, a creative play-space for all ages that meditates on the present as it relates to the past as well as an imagined future.

The host venue Macaulay Heritage Park will also have interesting artifacts from its collection on display as part of festivities.

Attendance is free of charge, though donations are welcomed. Click here for a look at the first Ice Box event.
